Industry in an Open Science Community
A new way of innovation
The community surrounding open science already consists both large established companies and SMEs covering many different industries but all surrounding the importance of material science. The experience and knowledge found across the involved companies will help move along the innovation process in other companies. Furthermore, the involvement of senior scientists from universities across Denmark, provides an opportunity of getting scientific input on processes, products and other relevant areas whenever needed. As a company entering the open science community, you do not only get access to scientific knowledge and projects surrounding current and especially future challenges but also a very large network of companies with interests in material science, ready to share knowledge and experiences. The Open Science Community offers a new arena where innovative challenges and science is discussed between scientists and companies of different industries, this is a forum to debate ideas, knowledge, and basic challenges. Thus challenges, both current challenges unfit for the student projects and future challenges addressable by student may be discussed with competent specialized persons.
The Open Science collaboration contains both large, well established companies and smaller companies in the earlier phases of business. The input and outcome of joining the open science collaboration are different depending on the type and size of the company. Large well-established companies will be able to engage in research projects to secure innovation and development for the future as well as get a feeling of what is hot in other industries – maybe procedures or materials will be directly transferable from one industry to another. Smaller companies and startups, that will normally not engage in longer research and development projects, will be able to engage in projects with important players from both the industry and universities for free.
The open science collaboration is an opportunity to engage in scientific student projects at different levels. You can participate in supervising and mentoring the student, you can stay on the sideline and read up on the projects on the open science framework, and everything in between. However, the more you engage the more value you will be able to subtract. In guiding and mentoring the student, you will not just add a profile of social responsibility to your profile, you will also be able to direct their education ensuring competent employees in the future. By engaging directly in the supervision role, you will be able to affect the direction of the project ensuring maximum knowledge relevant for your challenges.

Bjarke Jørgensen’s research focuses on developing methods for food inspection based on impedance spectroscopy, dielectric spectroscopy and hyperspectral imaging. His research and development team at Newtec Engineering has for the last four years been focusing on the synthesis, functionalization and structuring of graphene in order to explore the potential use of this novel material for future applications.

Faerch Plast is a leading plastic tray producer in Europe.
