The first Open Science Lecture is hosted by ST Entrepreneurship and SPOMAN Open Science. It will be an exciting discussion of Smart Materials and Open Innovation from an Industry perspective. The Lecture is given by Sumitra Rajagopalan, Founder and CEO of Bioastra Technologies,

Smart or Stimuli-Responsive Materials and Polymers have captured the imagination of scientists the world over for the last two decades – yet commercial applications are few and far between.

Bioastra Technologies is a company based in Montreal that sought to make that bold leap from scientific promise to creating disruptive technologies in biomedical engineering, robotics and cleantech: Self-healing skins, artificial muscles, injectable implants, smart gloves, smart boxes – among many others.

The company owes its growth trajectory to a unique business model centred on co-creation and co-commercialisation, commonly known as Open Innovation.

This talk will cover not only the exciting science of smart materials but also the perilous but ultimately rewarding journey of materials commercialisation. It will end with a vision of how all smart materials are effectively building blocks of a new economic system – that of the circular economy.

The lecture on November 8, is followed by an Open Seminar about Cirkular Economy on Nov 19.
